"Why are you a photographer?" is a question I keep asking myself. After all, with the advent of affordable dSLRs, isn't that market just overwhelmed now with amateur, semi-professionals, and professionals now? Yes it is.
As I speak with other fellow photographers, I begin to see the gap that separates me from the "rest of them". It's the knowledge of photography. You see, I started out shooting with film. Film is unforgiving, not to mention expensive...meaning there is not a lot of room for errors, there is a need for understanding of light and understanding of exposures. Starting out with film establishes a strong foundation in the world of photography.
It is not to say that one cannot learn this foundation via dSLR. On the contrary, dSLR's affords you the luxuries of making numerous mistakes without sacrificing any money. The problem is, who is actually taking the time to understand why one exposure is better than the next? Not many. It's set this to auto, shoot 1000 frames, one ought to be good, spend all your time in photoshop adjusting. This is the workflow I've been seeing other photographers use. That's not what I'm about.
I'd rather have a great picture captured in-camera than a mediocre one that's post-processed into a great one. The latter just tells me that you are an expert graphic designer and not an expert photographer.
So, why am I a photographer? Because I am constantly learning. Because I love the challenge. Because I love utilizing the knowledge I've gained and applying it to the next project. Because I love both the control and the sponteneity of it. And because I just love making great photos.
Never stop learning.
